Some of the world's most beautiful women vied for the title of Miss Universe 2009 contest on Sunday night, descending on Nassau, Bahamas, to compete.
This is most famous and most viewed beauty contest by people all over this world. This beauty contest "Miss Universe 2009" started at The Island in the Bahamas with the hosts Billy Bush and Claudia Jordan.

The 83 contestants participates in this beauty contest because Jewel Selver from Turks & Caicos withdrew from 2009 Miss Universe contest on August 22, 2009.

Miss South America

Did you know- By 1981,the First Miss South America Universe was held in Peru's capital of Lima. This event served as a springboard for its winning bid for the 1982 Miss Universe Pageant. Brazil's Joao Havelange, Chairman of the FIFA, was one of the international judges. Miss Venezuela, Irene Saez -now a politician-won the trophy.

Semi-finalists

Did you know- The 12 semi-finalists were: Canada (winner), Guam (first runner-up), Italy (second runner-up), Greece (third runner-up), USA (fourth runner-up), England, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Germany, South Africa, and Finland. They were elected among 77 candidates from Asia, Africa, Europe, South Pacific, and the Americas. There were 12 international judges, among them Cicely Tyson (actress), Franco Nero (actor), Ron Duguay (Canada's athlete), and Dong Kingman (painter).

Miss Universe 1957

Did you know- Peru is the birthplace of Latin America's first Miss Universe: Gladys Zender Meir. Miss Zender won the beauty contest in 1957. About twenty-five years later, by July 1982, she was one of the international judges in Lima (Peru), along with Mario Vargas Llosa, one of Latin America's most respected and prolific authors. Since 1957, no other Peruvian has won the beauty contest. Today she is the "First Lady of San Isidro", one of the most modern districts of Lima, Peru's capital city.

The Bahamas

Did you know- Surprisingly, Miss Bahamas, Ava Marilyn Burke, a black beauty queen, won the Miss Photogenic title; the second time in the 30-year history of the Miss Universe that one black delegate had won the award. Burke brought home her nation's first special award.

The Cayman Islands

Did you know- Miss Cayman Islands, Maureen Lewis, was the ninth Caribbean girl to win the international title in 30 years of the pageant competition. Unlike her late predecessor, she was a black girl.

Did you know- Of the foreign delegates in Lima, three had competed in Miss World 1981: Ireland, Spain and Wales. For unknown reasons, Tahiti (South Pacific) and Yugoslavia (Eastern Europe) did not attend to the MU.

Latin American Favorites

Did you know- After photographs of the 77 entries appeared in newspapers in Lima, Chile's Jenny Purtho Arap became one of the pre-pageant favorites. She had been seen as the first Chilean with a real chance to win the universal title. Historically Chile had not been competitive in MU. Other favorites for Latin America were: Ava Marilyn Burke (Bahamas/ Miss Photogenic 1982), Celice Pinto Marques da Silva (Brazil), Eva Lissethe Barahona (Honduras), Maria Francesca Zaza Reinoso (Peru), and Ana Teresa Oropeza (Venezuela).

BIOGRAPHY:

Hodge attended British Virgin Islands High School from 1997 to 2002 and graduated from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in 2004 with an associate's degree in natural sciences, where she collaborated in public relations and designing the college's website.[1]

Hodge is presently pursuing a bachelor's degree in media and communication, with a specialization in multimedia, at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, where she's won the multimedia student award for her graduating class.

Hodge, who stands 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in) tall, competed as one of 5 finalists in Miss British Virgin Islands 2010, held in Road Town on August 1, 2010, where she obtained six special awards including Best in Swimsuit, Best in Evening Wear, Best Intellect and Best Poise.

As the the eventual winner of the title, Hodge was crowned by outgoing titleholder Josefina Nunez, gaining the right to represent the British Virgin Islands in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant, to be broadcast live from São Paulo, Brazil on September 12, 2011.

A graduate from Cambridge shire has been crowned World Miss University. Katie Farr, 24, from Isleham, contested against 42 other women from across the globe.

Katie, who graduated from Leeds University with a politics degree, secured a place in the final after she scooped the Miss Leeds honor and came in the top 20 in the Miss England pageant.

She has an IQ of 140 and is the first Brit to get the crown since the competition was launched in 1986.

World Miss University is an international contest held yearly in Seoul since 1986 and is organized by the International Association of University Presidents. The organizing committee dispatches harmony missions to regions in conflict like Kosovo and Rwanda.

Katie said: “I was in a state of shock and disbelief upon hearing I’d won. We had some actually interesting debates. “We were all students or graduates – it was academically engaging and not cheesy at all.

Katie won a cash prize and is planning to use the cash to pay off some of her student debt. She said: “I’d been looking for a graduate job without success for a year when I was invited to the World Miss University competition.

“I’d already done some aid work in South Africa before my degree, which enthused me to study politics and have recently been applying for grant schemes. “But nothing has quite yet come in concert.”

Lina Axmacher was crowned Miss Universe Stockholm 2011. She is 26 year old and stands 5’7”. Lina will advance to compete in Miss Universe Sweden 2011 pageant to be held on June 4.
